Meet JacobAssociate | Attorney at Law
The leading rule for the lawyer, as for the man of every other calling, is diligence. Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today. Never let your correspondence fall behind. Whatever piece of business you have in hand, before stopping, do all the labor pertaining to it which can then be done.” –Abraham Lincoln
Tell me about your Family.
I have been happily married for six years to Andrea Langeveld. Andrea is a MD [graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center] and she is currently finishing her residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic. We have one child, Christian. He is 18 months and is a super happy baby.
Who was your major influence in your life and why?
I have been an enthusiastic Utah Jazz fan my whole life and my favorite player was John Stockton. In Stockton’s 19 year career, he played in all of the Jazz’s games in 17 of those seasons. For Stockton, there were no games off to rest, no suspensions, and no days off for bumps or bruises. He came to play every day and was so unassuming that most of the other teams forgot how good of a player he was for the Jazz. There are few players that will come close to breaking some of the records he set. As a young person growing-up, Stockton’s work ethic made a big impression on me. I modeled my level of dedication and consistency on all aspects of my life after Stockton. Life is not always a sprint, and in the legal profession the best lawyers are those that are consistently working at a high level while advancing the interests of their client.
What are your hobbies and enjoy doing?
I enjoy basketball, hiking, and fishing. Most of the time I enjoy spending time with family and exploring the community in which we live. My wife and I also enjoy watching British Mysteries.
How are you involved in the community?
I am active in my church and take on several volunteer positions. I am also a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and Habitat for Humanity.
What is that ONE case that you will always remember and why?
The first case I tried was an automobile accident in Atlantic, Iowa. I was impressed with the role of the jury and seriousness those jurors took their legal responsibility. While the judicial system is not always perfect, this experience gave me added confidence that the people of Southwest Iowa are upright persons and as a lawyer I can trust that a jury will always follow the law.
